What provision at this level looks like and feels like
For the organisation
In 2008, no broadcasters evaluated at this level.
An organisation without any form of induction process would be very unwelcoming… and not only to newcomers.
For the training function
If a trainer is not empowered to induct new staff, what is s/he empowered to do?
Benefits & risks of provision at this level
Benefits
There are no detectable benefits of provision at this level.
Risks
Not inducting new staff involves several substantial risks:
- That new staff will be less effective – they won’t know how to get things done
- That they will feel alienated – they won’t know “how we do things around here”
- That their efforts will be misdirected – they won’t know the organisation’s aims, values or policies
- That they work unsafely, in terms of people’s physical safety or of the organisation’s reputation… or both
- That they won’t react in the desired way when an issue arises
- That existing staff will spend longer helping new staff get the basics right or – worse – dealing with the consequences of their errors
- That the employer will be found to be in breach of employment legislation
- That recruitment and retention will suffer.
Processes & benchmarks for evaluating provision at this level
If there is no induction process, the organisation’s provision is at this level.

What it takes to get to the next level
The following will get you to the next level:
- All new starters are formally welcomed by their line manager, who then introduces them to their workmates
- Team members brief new starters on:
- the organisation’s overall responsibilities and priorities
- key corporate policies that affect their work, including:
- dealing with bullying and harassment
- anti-discrimination
- confidentiality
- health & safety requirements and procedures
- systems, policies and procedures that directly affect the new starter’s day-to-day work
- The key points from the above are provided in writing for later reference
- A buddy, coach or mentor is identified who is responsible for helping the new starter with any questions that arise.
Doing some of the above all of the time, or all of the above some of the time, still counts as Level A.
